To make the most of your Mesa Arch experience, take a few minutes to decide what to wear and bring so you can have a comfortable and enjoyable hike.

  • Appropriate Attire: Wear comfortable and weather-appropriate clothing, considering the fluctuating temperatures of the high, dry desert environment.
  • Essential Gear: Bring water, a hat, sunscreen, and a camera for capturing moments along the trail.

Precautions

While Mesa Arch offers a unique experience, visitors should be aware of certain precautions to ensure their safety and the preservation of the natural environment.

  • Cliff Drop-Off: Mesa Arch is located near a cliff edge. Visitors should exercise caution, especially when approaching the arch for photos. Be very mindful of the edge and don’t test your luck with getting too close.

Our Experience Hiking to Mesa Arch

We explored Canyonlands National Park in April, and it felt very chilly in the mornings! The Moab area of Utah warms up quite quickly though, so we shed our layers by 9 a.m.

Mesa Arch is one of, if not THE, most popular trails in the Islands in the Sky District of Canyonlands. Professional photographers and influencers know that the best time for pictures is the morning, so be prepared to see at least a couple other people on the trail, no matter what time you’re visiting. If I visited again, I’d love to see this area in the evening to see the dark sky full of stars.

Because of its popularity, the trail is extremely well maintained and there is a good amount of parking. Plus, the trail is very short at only about a half mile round trip. So, even if you come at a time when there are no parking spots available, just wait a couple minutes and you’ll likely get one as another person finishes up.

I’d recommend starting your day in Canyonlands by experiencing sunrise at this viewpoint. Check with weather websites to learn sunrise times for the time you’re planning on visiting. We followed this hike by going to several other nearby viewpoints: Shafer Canyon Overlook and Green River Overlook.

  • Ideal Photography Times: Sunrise is the prime time for photographers to capture the beauty of Mesa Arch.
  • Crowd Considerations: Arriving early not only ensures the best lighting conditions. But it also allows photographers to secure a prime shooting location without the interference of crowds.
