One of North Carolina’s many beautiful waterfall hikes, skinny dip falls in Pisgah National Forest is a short, family-friendly hike to a refreshing swimming hole. The multilayered, cascading waterfall is a perfect spot to relax and cool off in the cold mountain water. Heads up, there is no skinny dipping at skinny dip falls!

In August of 2021 there was a massive flood from Tropical Storm Fred. Skinny Dip Falls had to be closed for some time, however, it is currently open and accessible for hiking and swimming!
Hike the Skinny Dip Falls Trail
Nestled within Pisgah National Forest, this natural oasis offers a combination of hiking and the opportunity to take a dip in a pristine mountain stream. Follow the well-marked and moderate 1 mile trail that leads you through lush forested and over charming footbridges. The trail gradually descends, guiding you to the main attraction: the waterfall.
Remember to bring appropriate footwear, as the trail can be rocky and slippery at times. My trusty hiking boot – Merrell Moab 2 – is a durable and comfortable choice to lace up in for this trail.
Additionally, pack essentials such as water, snacks, and sunscreen. While this Appalachian area is stunning year-round, it’s particularly popular during warmer months. Arriving early in the day or on weekdays can help you avoid crowds and fully embrace the tranquil atmosphere.
The Dragon Tree in North Carolina
Shortly after beginning from the trailhead by the Looking Rock Overlook, you’ll see a striking tree shaped like a dragon. The dragon tree, as it is referred to, is the second biggest draw to this trail. I hadn’t heard about it before starting this hike and it caught my eye right away.
Make a Splash at Skinny Dip Waterfall
Upon arriving at the falls, you’ll be greeted by a series of cascades, each forming a refreshing pool of crystal-clear water. The name “Skinny Dip Falls” may pique your curiosity, but it’s important to note that despite its playful moniker, swimming in the falls is indeed allowed and enjoyed by many visitors wearing their bathing suits!
There are tons of unique waterfall hikes in North Carolina, especially near Asheville in the western area of the state. Graveyard Falls, Looking Glass Falls, and Moore Cove Falls aren’t too far of a drive from this area. The pools offer a chance to cool off and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the surroundings.
Directions, Trailhead, and Parking for Skinny Dip Falls
To reach Skinny Dip Falls, start your journey at the Blue Ridge Parkway. It’s a bit less than 30 miles from Asheville, NC, near milepost 417.
There is no clear sign for the trailhead that you can see while driving. Instead, look for the overlook for Looking Glass Rock. Park in the overlook area and walk across the parkway to the trailhead. You should see a sign for the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. This is the trail yo will follow almost until the end – when you come to a junction in the trail, bear left to continue onto the waterfall.
