Geology Teetering on the Edge
Balanced Rock is a remarkable geological formation that consists of Entrada Sandstone, a sedimentary rock deposited millions of years ago. The unique shape of Balanced Rock is a result of differential erosion, where the softer underlying rock eroded faster than the harder caprock, creating the precarious balance that the formation is known for. The pedestal the rock sits on is Dewey Bridge Member, which is less resistant to erosion.
Over many years, wind and water sculpted the stone, forming the iconic 128 feet (39 m) tall rock atop a narrow pedestal.
Red rock formations within the park are still changing and won’t stay in their same balancing acts forever. In the winter of 1975-76, a smaller pillar to the side of Balanced Rock, named Chip Off The Old Block fell. Many other rock arches have also changed or collapsed completely over the short time it’s been protected land.
