About Black Balsam and the Art Loeb Trail

Black Balsam Knob is a prominent peak located in the Appalachian Mountains of western North Carolina. It’s in the Pisgah National Forest off the Blue Ridge Parkway and is often crowded because of its accessibility and beautiful panoramic vistas. The Art Loeb Trail, which passed by Black Balsam, was named after a local hiking enthusiast, Art Loeb, who played a significant role in advocating for the creation of the trail.

Difficulty of Black Balsam Knob Hike

Black Balsam is often rated as a moderate hike due to the incline from the parking area to the top of the mountain. There are some loose rocks and the trail can be muddy and slippery in wet conditions. The trail is relatively short and you likely won’t work up a sweat.

Personally, I would not consider Black Balsam a hard or even moderate hike for a generally healthy, semi-in-shape individual. When I visited, there were many older folks, young kids and families, and dogs on leashes hiking the trail. Hiking poles can be handy if you have any doubts about making it to the top. It’s a good hike to stack with others, such as continuing on the Art Loeb Trail to Tennent Mountain

Camping for Thru Hikers

While camping directly on Black Balsam Knob itself is not permitted, there are camping options available in the vicinity of Black Balsam Knob within the Pisgah National Forest. The closest camping area is the Black Balsam Knob/Art Loeb Trailhead parking area, where dispersed camping is allowed. This means you can set up your tent in designated spots near the parking area.

However, it’s important to follow the guidelines and regulations set by the Pisgah National Forest, such as obtaining any necessary permits, practicing Leave No Trace principles, and respecting fire restrictions.

There are other established campgrounds nearby, such as the Davidson River Campground and the North Mills River Campground, which provide more developed facilities and amenities. Before planning your camping trip, it’s always recommended to check with the local authorities or the Pisgah National Forest for any updated regulations or restrictions that may be in place.
