One of western North Carolina’s many beautiful waterfalls is the stunning and aptly named High Falls Trail. Hike along an easy one mile long route in DuPont State Forest to this amazing 120 ft tall waterfall. Located under an hour drive from Asheville near Hendersonville, NC, it’s the highest cascading waterfall in the park and one of the most amazing one’s in the state.

The Tar Heel State is chock full of breathtaking waterfalls that are perfect for chasing during summer, spring, fall or winter! While waterfalls are located across the state, the western area near Asheville happens to be a special hub for amazing hikes, mountain views, and waterfalls such as Skinny Dip or Moore Cove Falls. No need to go to a National Park like the Great Smokey Mountains when North Carolina has plenty of bucket-list-worthy trails that’re free to access!
Hiking the High Falls Trail
Located in Henderson and Transylvania Counties, near Hendersonville and Brevard, Dupont State Forest brings far away tourists and loyal locals into the woods throughout the seasons. In its 10,400 acres, there are plenty of beautiful trails to explore, however, High Falls is a must.
There is a Visitor Center with a parking area, maps, educational displays, and bathrooms by the trailhead to High Falls. You can take the trail or use Buck Forest Road for about 0.3 miles. Go left on High Falls Loop Trail. Then, take a right turn at the fork towards the waterfall after another 0.2 miles. You’ll be able to see the waterfall from a viewing area above, or walk down to the base of the falls.
When the water isn’t too high and the weather is nice, you can carefully make your way across the rocks along the river bank to get closer. If you decide to walk on the rocks, be extremely careful of your footing so you do not slip.
DuPont State Forest Rules
When planning your trip to hike High Falls Trail in NC, familiarize yourself with the park’s rules, which include:
- Park hours are 5am to 10pm
- No climbing, jumping, sliding, or diving on the rocks or waterfalls.
- You’re only allowed to swim or wade in the water when you’re at least 300 ft away from the waterfall.
- Pets are allowed on leashes.
- No camping, campfires, or cooking fires.
- Do not enter areas where signs are posted prohibiting entry.
- No alcohol or illegal substances in the park.
