What to Expect Hiking to Hooker, Triple and High Waterfalls
There are a few ways you can access this loop trail. You can access the path either by parking at the Hooker Falls access area or the High Falls access area. DuPont State Forest has clearly posted maps and well marked trails that will lead you throughout the park.
On the Trail to Hooker Falls
Beginning at Hooker Falls, follow the wide trail through the evergreen and hardwood forest a quarter mile to the waterfall. This peaceful and charming waterfall offers a perfect opportunity to dip your feet and spread out in this large area. Remember not to climb on the slippery rocks near the base or on the waterfall itself.
Continuing onto Triple Falls
Once you’ve had your fill of Hooker Falls, head back on the trail the way you came. Walk across the pedestrian bridge and continue about 0.3 miles along the Little River. This portion of the hike is uphill as you gain about 120 ft in elevation.
You’ll hear the powerful sound of the water and will see a spur trail to the right of a picnic area which leads to the Triple Falls overlook area. Or, you can take the trail to the left, which takes you down the base of the top two tiers of Triple Falls. Warning, there are A LOT of stairs! So keep in mind, what goes down, must come up again!
At the base of the waterfall, stay within the barricades for your own protection, and the protection of the natural habitats around the cascading falls.
Finish Strong with High Falls
Return to the trail to continue onto High Falls until you hit a fork in the trail.
The spur trail to your left will lead you to an overlook area to see the falls from afar and then you can continue on the High Falls Trail to the left. Continue for another quarter of a mile and keep left taking the Riverbend Trail if you’d like to go to the base of the falls.
As the backdrop for a scene in the movie The Hunger Games, High Falls is a seriously impressive waterfall. Cascading from 125 ft tall granite, High Falls is one of four major waterfalls on the Little River and the largest in DuPont State Forest.
Continue hiking on the High Falls Loop to the covered bridge so you can return to the Hooker Falls access area where you began!
